Holistic care Dr. Frishman practices Integrative Medicine:
A new movement today in medicine is the incorporation of modern, Western medicine with the best of other forms of healing into a single, more expansive, integrative medical system. This is based upon the concept that there is only one medicine, medicine that helps patients recover from injury and disease. Practitioners of integrative medicine combine traditional medicine with alternative forms of healing to treat their patients based upon what problem the patient has.

Acupuncture ACUPUNCTURE AND YOUR ANIMALS In veterinary medicine, acupuncture has been used to rebalance the total energy system of animals' bodies to facilitate healing and health. In animals, just as in people, there are precise locations on or near the surface of the body known as acupuncture points. These points, when stimulated, can produce changes in the body's internal organs and functions. Traditionally, inserting a fine, stainless steel, gold, or silver needle into the point does the stimulating or influencing of these points. Other methods of stimulation include application of heat, electricity, laser light or injection.
Acupuncture works particularly well for the following chronic conditions:
* arthritis * hip displasia * epilepsy * incontinence * asthma * skin allergies * liver disease * kidney disease * nerve disorders * injuries * hepatitis * hind leg weakness * age-related illness

Radiographs
Penn Hip Radiographs Dr. Frishman and the staff at Progressive Animal Hospital are certified to do Penn Hip radiographs. The Penn Hip radiographs are the best predictor of future hip dysplasia in dogs, as stress radiographs are taken and compared to other individuals of the same breed. All Penn Hip x-ray films taken are submitted for evaluation. Penn Hip evaluation reports are not pass-fail. Instead, each dog is ranked compared to other dogs of that breed. Vet-Stem Regenerative Cell therapy Vet-Stem is now available for dogs.
In the same way that Vet-Stem Regenerative Cell (VSRC) therapy has demonstrated successful therapeutic outcomes in horses with tendon and ligament injuries, fractures, and joint disease, it is now being used to treat osteoarthritis in dogs.
Since 2005, selected clinics have treated dogs with osteoarthritis and orthopedic soft tissue injuries. Initial studies demonstrate that intra-articular administration of CSRCs significantly decreases pain and improves comfort in the majority of cases. Duration of benefit from a single injection varies from several months to more than one year.
Clinical trials for osteoarthritis of the canine elbow, hip, and stifle are ongoing with successful results soon to be published.
Canine orthopedic application:
* Osteoarthritis * Orthopedic soft tissue: tendon and ligament injuries |

Genetic testing Genetic mapping looks at your animals genetic “blue print” or DNA to detect whether your pet is at risk for developing a chronic or life-threatening disease allowing your veterinarian to take preventive measures before it appears and design a customized therapy for your pet's existing condition.
Certain breeds of dogs can have adverse reactions to common drugs based on their genetic make-up. New biotechnology testing allows veterinarians to discover if the pet can tolerate the medication or not.
For more information about genetic testing & adverse drug reactions please visit: The Canine Inherited Disorders Database at http://www.upei.ca/~cidd/intro.htm or The Washington State University Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory at http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-VCPL/
